Police Officer Careers

The City of Pleasant Hill has three options to join our team, whether you are currently an officer, an academy graduate, or looking to start your career in law enforcement.

POLICE OFFICER
TRAINEE

Entry level applicants will attend and graduate from a 26 week Law Enforcement Academy. Officers will be required to pass 42 written exams on course content.  In addition to mental and physical tests, the recruits will be expected to master the technical skills of firearms operation, defensive tactics, and emergency vehicle operation (EVOC).

ACADEMY
GRADUATE

If you have graduated from a California Post Accredited Police Academy and are not currently working as a sworn peace officer. Patrols assigned to an area in a vehicle, responsibilities include the protection of life and property, and to prevent and deter the commission of crimes. Officers will enforce traffic laws and respond to calls or complaints involving traffic accidents. Officers will investigate crimes, disturbances, and other misdemeanors and felonies, and take necessary police action when necessary.

LATERAL
POLICE OFFICER

If you are currently employed as a sworn peace officer in the State of California and have completed your probationary period. Patrols assigned to an area in a vehicle, responsibilities include the protection of life and property, and to prevent and deter the commission of crimes. Officers will enforce traffic laws and respond to calls or complaints involving traffic accidents. Officers will investigate crimes, disturbances, and other misdemeanors and felonies, and take necessary police action when necessary.

Up to $165,436 / year + incentives and $20,000 hiring bonus
Including 10% raise paid over 3 year contract until 2025

What careers and positions are available at Pleasant Hill PD?

We are actively hiring for Police Officer (entry level, direct, and lateral) positions.

Recruitments for police support staff positions (Records Specialists, Property Technicians, and Crime Scene Technicians - just to name a few!) are posted as the positions become available.

Do I need a college degree to apply?

No - a college degree is NOT required to apply for many of the positions here at PHPD!  

Several positions, however, do require completion of some college credits (or proof of honorable discharge from the Armed Forces) to meet minimum qualifications:

Police Officer Trainee (Entry-Level):  High school diploma and 60 units of college-level course work
Academy Graduate: High school diploma and 45 units of college-level course work in addition to graduation from POST Basic Academy

Lateral Candidates: High school diploma and 30 units of college-level course work
